Why There is a Need
Military members and their families have sacrificed for us, now it is our turn to serve them. National Guard & Reserve members of the Armed Forces make up almost 50% of the Service Members deployed in the current conflicts. At the same time, these Troops and their families do not have the sustained support systems of living on military bases. In addition over 50% of Active Duty full time military members and their families do not live on military bases.
These folks need the help of their civilian communities. Having support reduces the risk of problems and helps make sure that no matter where someone turns to for help, they will find the assistance they need.
It has become apparent that many services and resources already exist, however many do not know about them. At the same time, civilians lack an awareness of the challenges that service members and their families face because of deployment.
The Maine Military & Community Network was created to address these issues.
Working collaboratively, the Military Family Assistance Centers, the VA, the National Guard’s Deployment Cycle Support, Chaplains, the Bureau of Maine Veterans Services, Maine state health services, and many other community members have teamed up to create a safety network for Maine Service Members, veterans, and their families. We hope you will join us today.
